Deaf Cultural Awareness

  • Is your business or organisation Deaf aware?
  • Are your services accessible to customers D/deaf people?
  • Are you aware of how to deal with D/deaf people if they access your services?
  • What is cultural awareness?

“Someone’s cultural awareness is their understanding of the differences between themselves and people from other countries or other backgrounds, especially differences in attitudes and values.”

Simply put, cultural awareness is about understanding that our cultures impact and shape how we see the world; that differences are natural and that when we work with people from other cultures, we need to be aware of where, when, how and when our cultures may either help or hinder us in terms of communication and collaboration.

You might be surprise at learning about Deaf culture and how we very different to other cultures.

Learn Sign Language

British Sign Language (BSL) is the first or preferred language of an estimated 70,000 Deaf people in the UK. The British Sign Language Act 2022 recognises BSL as an official language of England, Scotland and Wales – the same status afforded to Welsh and Scots Gaelic.

Currently we offer tailor-made introduction to basic sign language course, which is an entry level course. This is ideal for anyone wanting to learn some signs and gain a better understanding of deaf awareness. This course can be from three to six weeks and we will ensure that it fits in within your working pattern.

Please note these activities are from April to November and weather permitting for the above activities to go ahead.

Deaf Parenting Course

Sign Access provides Deaf parenting course for anyone who requires it or if you feel you need help with parenting.

We aim to support Deaf parents by giving them the tools and knowledge to become more independent and empowered as parents.

We provide parenting courses through one to one or group sessions whether it is individually or privately funded.

Many parents know the joys and challenges of parenting but have access to a wealth of support whether it is support groups, online courses or via telephone. However, many Deaf parents do not have access to this due to communication barriers.

Deaf parents are unable to communicate with other parents and professionals, and many of the information and services are not accommodated into BSL.

Many Deaf parents can feel isolated and can find parenting challenging without the support that other parents can access due to not having it in their native language. Deaf parents often miss out or not have the opportunities to make informed decisions that are best for their children.

We believe it is beneficial for Deaf parents to have parenting courses that are delivered by a Deaf trainer as they will be able to share their experience and feel comfortable getting support from a Deaf person.

We will also set up Deaf parenting support groups online in which Deaf parents can share their experiences, concerns and support for other Deaf parents on a monthly basis.

If you need support or would like to make a referral for parenting support, please email on [email protected] for more information.
